Applying for asylum in Sweden as an LGBTQI person is a demanding process. Rainbow Refugees empowers and supports rainbow people who have fled persecution and discrimination in their home countries. Every week around 10 LGBTQI refugees fleeing discrimination and violence in their home countries arrive in Sweden. However, they are placed in asylum centres where they are exposed to threats, harassment and violence from other residents. These asylum centres are oftentimes located on the outskirts of cities where the asylum seekers have poor access to support activities, which is something that Rainbow Refugees provides support and assistance for. By setting up a meeting place and covering travel costs, Rainbow Refugees can offer social, mental and emotional support to asylum seekers who find themselves in limbo, undocumented or in a Dublin situation.
Sweden is one of 37 countries in the world that grant asylum because of discrimination based on sexuality and/or gender identity. Despite this, the process is long and complicated because the individual is not always believed or lacks the necessary tools to navigate the system. Sexuality and gender identity are also difficult to prove and many are denied because of the lack of evidence. Refugees are expected to act and present themselves according to a specific narrative in order to be believed.

With the help of the Rainbow Foundation, MCC (Moscow Community Center) opened a sheltered accommodation for LGBTQI people in 2017. MCC receives continued support in 2022 and 2023 to run and develop its operations. In the first years, the shelter mainly took in people who fled for their lives from Chechnya due to the increased repression against LGBTQI people in Chechnya. The situation in Chechnya received a lot of international attention. In the sheltered accommodation, LGBTQI people have been given a safe space to recover, get support, find work and start their lives again.

RTI (Refugee Trans Initiative) in Kenya has a safe accommodation for trans refugees which protects trans people from physical and sexual violence, extortion by authorities and individuals, evictions, intimate partner violence and psychological violence including discrimination, harassment and threats. RTI is a trans-led organization that works to improve the conditions and rights of trans migrants through advocacy and direct support. The center acts as a home for migrants and those who have been subjected to transphobic attacks in their community.
