In the spring of 2023, Uganda passed a law that means life imprisonment for homosexuality and in some cases you are sentenced to death. Those who help homosexuals, for example renting out a home, are punished with 10 years in prison. The new law also means that children can be sentenced to up to three years in prison for homosexual behavior. The Rainbow Foundation started a fundraiser and managed to collect 700,000 kroner in a few days. The money is used to provide sheltered accommodation when activists are threatened, harassed or evicted and we provide funds for psychosocial support. The Rainbow Foundation's support also contributes to the legal work to invalidate the law.

The Rainbow Foundation provides emergency extra support to Civil Rights Defender's work for LGBTQI people in Ukraine with SEK 350,000. Civil Rights Defenders has previous collaborations with LGBTQI organizations in Ukraine. Many of these organizations want to be able to remain in the country for as long as possible. LGBTQI people in eastern Ukraine have long had a hard time. A possible Russian takeover risks exacerbating homophobia in the area, which would result in them being doubly exposed, both from the war and discrimination. There is a strong sense of belonging in the networks. You don't want to leave anyone alone, but instead stay and fight on together. For many human rights defenders, Ukraine has been the place where they could most safely carry out their work. Many rainbow activists from countries such as Belarus, Uzbekistan and Russia have applied there. Now they are faced with the threat of having to flee once more and then also leave their means of livelihood behind. The emergency support from the Rainbow Foundation is used for protection and humanitarian support in the form of food, water and medicines. The LGBTQI organizations themselves have raised the importance of psychosocial support as soon as possible, which will also be provided. In the long term, the support will also go towards the construction and increased security of both the activists' accommodation and their organizations so that they can continue their important work for LGBTQI rights even outside of Ukraine and in a situation where many are on the run. "The support from the Rainbow Foundation means an incredible amount to an already vulnerable group of human rights defenders. Together, we can now enable more LGBTQI activists to continue their tireless work in a safe way.” says Anders L. Pettersson, Executive Director at Civil Rights Defenders.

Discrimination and inequalities increase during crises and disasters. After the earthquakes in Turkey and neighboring countries, LGBTQI people find it more difficult to get help and support from the major aid organizations. The Rainbow Foundation supports the organization SPoD, which provides crisis aid to LGBTQI people who have been affected by the disaster.

SPoD, (Social Policy, Gender Identity and Sexual Orientation Studies Association) is one of Turkey's largest organizations that works for the rights of LGBTQI people with advocacy work and lobbying, but also offers individual rainbow people legal help and psychosocial support.
